Grip, Ground, Get Up & Go will focus on hand strength, balance, walking—and something called proprioception. This class is led by volunteer Jesse Macedo, who has a BS in Kinesiology and is a certified strength and movement coach. He has extensive experience working with older adults including at CSUF’s Center for Successful Aging.
The class is a pilot – we will be trying it out for four Mondays: Sept. 14th, Sept. 21, Sept. 28th and October 5th with the possibility of extending it into the future.
If you would like to take the full 4 weeks, please sign up for each class. You will not be automatically registered for all four weeks. If you can only sign up for individual classes, that’s okay. Only register for the classes you can attend.
This class will focus on hand strength, balance, walking and proprioception (your body’s ability to sense its own position and location in space). The class will start with 15 minutes of chair exercises. If you need to sit for the rest of the class, that’s okay.
It is strongly recommended that participants purchase two supplies to make the most of this class. The supplies include a Theraband FlexBar Resistance Bar ($16) and yellow exercise band (appx $4). See below for the links.
The class will take place at Peninsula Community Church.
EQUIPMENT:
You will need:
1. A light exercise loop – or if you already have a band, you can bring it and knot it.
If you don’t have an elastic exercise loop, this is the recommended set:

We will be using the yellow loop that is the easiest to use (called extra light resistance).
**You are welcome to find a different exercise LOOP set, but please make sure there is an extra light loop in the pack. For instance, in the Theraband set linked above, the yellow has a 3 lb resistance loop. Some cheaper sets have an extra light loop, but the resistance may be heavier.
Again, we will be using the loop – if you have BANDS, you can always knot them to create a loop rather than buy a new set.
2. A YELLOW Theraband FlexBar Resistance Bar.
This is to work on your grip strength. When you click the link below, you will notice that there are different colors. Each color has a different strength. The yellow one is EXTRA LIGHT – and the easiest color to bend.
However, if you have pretty good grip and lower arm strength, you may want to buy the red one instead.
If you are not sure about your grip strength, start with the yellow. You can always buy it and return it and reorder. Here is the link to the YELLOW resistance bar on Amazon:
